How to Stop Being a Cell Phone Junkie?

An addiction is when the thing you are addicted starts to control your life and interferes with your daily activities, work and relationships. The classic definition of an alcoholic is someone who wakes up for a glass of vodka instead of a cup of coffee. But with the growth of technology, signs of dependence can also be found in places other than the bottom of a glass, in the form of cell phones.

How to Stop Being a Cell Phone Junkie?

If you find yourself checking your phone as the first thing in the morning, before you even get out of bed, you may be an addict. If you send text messages while driving, check your phone instead of working on a major job or check Facebook during a romantic dinner, the phone is sure to interfere with your life and you are a junkie. So what can you do to stop being a cell phone junkie?

The first 30 minutes of your day

If you find yourself waking up in the morning tightening the check-in of your phone before you even get out of bed, this is a serious problem. The first 30 minutes upon waking should be devoted to creating a good start to your day. That means getting out of bed, refreshing yourself, having 5 minutes to meditate and stretch and prepare a healthy breakfast. Start your day by doing positive, healthy things to build your inner strength to face the work day instead of seeing how many new videos you’ve received at WhatsApp .

Create time zones without phone

The truth of the matter is that having a cell phone close at work is common and sometimes even necessary. If the ringing of your phone is work related or not (the specific phone alert is rarely related to the current job at hand), if you are constantly distracting yourself with your phone when you leave, you will not stay focused on the work in front of you, decreasing productivity. Therefore, I advocate the creation of a time zone without a telephone. This means that for at least 2 hours of your day (when you are most productive and the work happens) you close your phone and get totally dedicated to working in front of you.

Turn off the phone when you get in the car.

Just like in an airplane you are invited to turn off your electronic devices and cell phones ( although this is changing), this should be the law of the road. It is impossible for your mind to be in two places at once. It is a law of physics: two things can not occupy the same space at the same time and if your mind and eyes are on your phone, they are not on the road. Driving is one of those places where you do not want to mess with the phone. Sometimes I hear the excuse “Well, I need my phone for directions, my GPS is on it. What do people say five years ago? You carefully mapped out your route before leaving the house or you would pull to the side of the road while you looked at a map. The same rule should apply today. When driving, turn off your phone and leave it well away so you are not even tempted to look at it. Your life and the lives of others are at stake.

Live in the real world!

When you have a real life person sharing a conversation, a meal or a cup of coffee, they are a real way of life. A real person right there in front of you get involved. Are you telling me that your virtual friends and virtual text conversations are more important than the real life person in front of you? Not only is this the roughest thing on the planet, but it breaks the friendships and can ruin relationships. Even if you tell a friend, “Oh, I just need to check this on my cell phone.” They may respond “Oh, okay …”. But the truth is that it is not OK. What you are saying is that the virtual message is more important than them. They took the time out of your busy life to meet you and share the actual life time with you. By turning your attention away from them you are inevitably saying “You’re not that important”. It really is a disease and we are so addicted to our phones that we ignore the people we are dating with Facebook people, Twitter and text messaging. Come on people, it’s time to get real.

Do not lose sleep on account of your mobile device

If you find yourself late into the night playing on your phone, watching videos, Facebook or swapping text messages , you are missing out on precious sleep over your addiction. The moment you stop putting energy into taking care of your basic needs and dump your time and energy into your phone, you are allowing the phone to dictate your health and well-being. If you get caught up in this scenario, my advice is to turn off your phone one hour before bedtime to ensure that your last hour is spent in a significant way and that you go to bed at the time of starting the next day of new. The telephone is not something that is worth losing sleep.

Taking responsibility for addiction

Now it is your turn. Are you in one of these scenarios? What is your plan of action to ensure that your phone is not dictating your life? Please share in the comments below and we will inspire each other to live a healthier, happier, more meaningful life by not just being dependent on a phone.
