Bull

Meaning of Bull

Dictionary

Bull is a word that has its origin in the Latin word bulla. It is, according to its application, the name with which it is identified a documentation of a pontifical nature issued by the Apostolic Chancellery and is legitimized by the printing of a lead seal or the papal seal. These documents deal with multiple relevant topics of clerical tasks, although civil matters are also addressed there.

According to DigoPaul, the bull, therefore, is an instrument that is based on the power of the Pope. It can include ordinances, convictions, indulgence decrees, or the granting of various types of benefits, for example.

The lead seals in whose central points the image of a cross, the figures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul and the signature of the Pope, together with the year of publication and date of the pontificate, are part of the formal structure of the bulls, which they are sent to the archbishop of the diocese. This will be responsible for distributing the bull, which is written in Latin, so that it reaches the parishes.

Throughout history there were different types of bull, such as the bull of the Holy Crusade (with indulgences for those who fought the infidels), the bull of the dead (with indulgences for a deceased individual), the bull of lacticinios (an authorization for ecclesiastics to use dairy products in the times when it was forbidden to them) and the bull of meat (which dispensed with waking food).

However, we must not ignore other types of bulls such as the one known as the golden bull. This was carried out in the year 1356 by Emperor Charles IV of Germany and got the support of the rest of the princes of the Empire. In the same, what was established and ruled were issues as relevant to said figures as the method of election of the emperor, the number of people who had to participate in said process or the ceremonies that said election would bring with it.

In the same way, the term bull has given rise to the development and creation of a large number of adverbial phrases that are used more or less frequently in the colloquial sphere. Thus, for example, we find the expression “not being able to with the bull.” It is used to make it clear that a person in question does not have the strength to do anything at that time.

And all this without forgetting the existence of the phrase “having a bull for something”. In this case, it is used to determine that someone has a series of advantages, facilities and benefits when it comes to achieving something difficult compared to other people who do not have any of the aforementioned issues in their favor to achieve the same objective.

It should be noted that the etymological origin of bull refers to all kinds of objects or elements with a round appearance and artificial character. The notion used to be used in other times to name a medal worn by the children of Roman noble families until the moment they began to wear the toga.

In addition to all the above, it must finally be emphasized that this year the famous rock group Status Quo has been carrying out the filming of its film entitled “Bula Quo” where the aforementioned artists interpret themselves.
