Luxurious or simple, condominium or isolated, wood, concrete or steel, the houseboat is curious alternative housing with undeniable charm.
The idea came as a response to the frequent floods that occur in countries such as the Netherlands, Australia and the United States. Today, housing conditions on the water are much better, and so it aroused the interest of many citizens living in these balancing addresses.
Although the occupation of water is unusual in Brazil, some sites have already adopted these facilities. In the Amazon, for example, the Amazon Jungle Palace hotel has chosen to build its entire structure on the Black River.
The first question of a technical nature is how these architectures are structured.
No magic tricks, these buildings are erected on a tubular steel frame, similar to those used on ferries. This ensures that the housing remains stable and always fluctuating due to the changing of the tides.
The idea seems pretty fun, actually, and two main points can be highlighted as benefits of these homes. It can be a solution for both the scarcity and high price of urban land and for flooding.
It is quite evident that there is the lack of space and the high cost of land in major cities. It is increasingly difficult to find a land with complete infrastructure at affordable cost. Thus, coastal cities can bet on these maritime villas to take advantage of their urban infrastructure better.
The second point is that the houses on the water are a possible solution to the frequent floods in residential areas. As the houseboats are built on a level capable of building system with water, it is possible that they are stable both at high tide and in low tide.
A renowned UK architecture firm, Carl Turner Architects’s developed a sustainable project for a houseboat, in which the idea was to create a condensed ecosystem similar to a boat in the ocean.
The house architecture works like this: a wooden box with rubber insulation seated on a floating tray 20 by 7 meters, with closure of two side panels. These panels serve as support for photovoltaic panels, which are capable of creating an electric current when in contact with light. So the house generates its own electricity and water heating.
In Brazil, since there is even a specific legislation to regulate this type of housing. Those who are interested in it have to submit a project signed by an engineer, and record the residence in the local maritime authority.
A floating house has a cost slightly higher than conventional homes. This is due solely to the low demand for this type of project. A house with a bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom costs on average $ 110,000 in the United States.
